5 Fantastic Free Cultural Events To Dive Into This Summer
When: July 25 (10:00am to 10:00pm) & July 26 (11:00am to 8:00pm)
Where: Town Centre Park, Coquitlam
What: A toe-tappingly fun family-friendly festival loved by in-the-know locals, hop off the SkyTrain at Lafarge Lake-Douglas Station and you’ll be just a few steps from all the action. The party kicks off with a parade (from 11:00am on July 25) and it’s followed by a jam-packed weekend of amazing live music, artisan vendors and a taste-tripping menu of delicious food vendors.
When: August 1 & August 2 (11:30am to 7:30pm)
Where: In an around Oppenheimer Park, Vancouver
What: Marking its 50th anniversary in 2026, this spectacular event is a must see for local and visitors. Expect an immersive celebration of Japanese Canadian culture, complete with live performances, craft demonstrations (including activities for kids) and lots of tasty food. We especially love the Taiko drumming and the tug of war contest!
When: August 8 (11:00am to 7:00pm) & August 9 (11:00am to 5:00pm)
Where: 500-block of Columbia Street, Vancouver
What: Along with the earlier-in-the-season Chinatown Festival (July 24 and 25), this sixth annual street party event is a great way to explore Vancouver’s most colourful neighbourhood. Expect cultural performances and live music as well as lots of tempting food stands and sparkling alfresco decorations that are perfect for pointing your camera at.
When: August 8 & 9 (11:00am to 8:00pm)
Where: Vancouver Art Gallery’s North Plaza
What: Immerse yourself in two cultures on the same weekend by checking out Light Up Chinatown as well as this city centre Thai-themed extravaganza. You’ll find arts and crafts stands and tasty food vendors to explore outside the Art Gallery––alongside a large stage where you can sit and enjoy live music, traditional dance performances and more.
Where: The Shipyards, North Vancouver
When: September 12 (from 1:00pm)
What: Located just across the harbour in North Van (hop on the SeaBus and make a day of it), this delightful family-friendly celebration is a real charmer. Expect everything from costumed dancers to traditional crafts and from art exhibits to kid-friendly activities. And if you’re hungry, you’ll also find lots of delicious Polish cuisine to dive into.
